Personal Social Emotional Development

& RSE

Our apporach to our curriculum at Mendell is based upon: Consistency Insistency Ambition

PSED is learning right and wrong, understanding feelings and to get on with others.

At Mendell Primary, we are aware that not all our children join us with equal cultural capital due to different experiences. In addition to this, children’s language starting points vary and some have a language deficit, which is a priority to overcome throughout their time at Mendell. 94.7% of people in Wirral consider themselves to be 'White British', suggesting that Black and Minority Ethnic groups are not well represented within our community. Our aim is to expose our children to different cultures, skin colours, hair types, abilities and morals. We strive for every child to see themselves represented by the characters in our No Outsiders: everyone different, everyone welcome books, as this promotes inclusion, diversity and belonging.

PSED in Early Years

Our PSED curriculum starts from EYFS and is progressive throughout Early Years, KS1, lower KS2, upper KS2 and beyond which provides a secure foundation for learners across the school.

In Nursery, we focus primarily on the Prime Areas and our F1 class start learning personal social and emotional development skills by adults modelling positive relationship, resilience and self regulation, through a mixture of adult led activities and within the environment. The practitioners in our EYFS setting develop the qualities of the ‘Characteristics Of an Effective Learner’ so they have secure foundations for future learning. F2 to Y6 follow the Jigsaw and No Outsiders progressive schemes.

Further information for how this is built upon and is progressive can be seen on our progression map. EYFS classes are also included on the PSED long term plan.

At Mendell, we have bought the Jigsaw programme because it is a progressive and effective scheme of work that aims to prepare children and young people for life. We teach PSED once a week and No Outsiders is taught once every half term, to allow children the time to revisit knowledge and understanding on a regular basis.

Jigsaw PSHE supports the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enable pupils to:

· Have a sense of purpose

· Value self and others

· Form relationships

· Make and act on informed decisions

· Communicate effectively

· Work with others

· Respond to challenge

· Be an active partner in their own learning

· Be active citizens within the local community

· Explore issues related to living in a democratic society

· Become healthy and fulfilled individuals

An important part of the Jigsaw PSHE programme is delivered through the 'Relationships' and 'Changing Me' puzzle pieces which are covered in the summer term.

There are four main aims of teaching RSE:

• To enable children to understand and respect their bodies
• To help children develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age and development
• To support children to have positive self-esteem and body image
• To empower them to be safe and safeguarded.

Throughout these lessons there is a focus on using the correct scientific vocabulary at each stage. The link below gives a full list of this vocabulary.

Jigsaw PSHE helps promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Jigsaw contributes, as a good PSHE programme should, to the British Values agenda very significantly, both through the direct teaching of information and through the experiential learning children will enjoy.

The 5 strands of the British Values agenda have been mapped across every Puzzle and every Piece (lesson). To see these, click the link below.

The majority of Jigsaw lessons are statutory therefore your child must take part in the learning of Changing Me and Relationships. However, a small number of these lessons are non-statutory and your child can be withdrawn from these lessons. If you wish your child to be withdrawn then please contact the school office.

Here is the list of the optional lessons:

Year 4 - Changing Me - Lesson 2

Year 5 - Changing Me - Lesson 4
