Ethos, Vision and Values

As Head Teacher of Mendell Primary School I am proud to share our ethos, vision and values with you. You are welcome to visit our school to see how these are incorporated into every day life at our school.

Our ethos and values are at the core of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning and provide a learning environment which prepares happy, confident children who are resilient and will thrive as they move on to the next stage in their educational journey and adulthood.

Our vision 'Aspire,  Challenge,  Achieve' embodies our whole school ethos. We want our pupils to be confident, aspirational and empowered to participate successfully at an academic, social and emotional level in a rapidly changing world, developing their own individual strengths and being positive role models in society.

Mendell is a reading school. All our children will learn to read by the age of 7, thereafter they read to learn. If our children are not able to read by the age of 7 they are heavily supported to catch up. We also encourage and foster a love of reading in our children.

We provide a positive, stimulating and caring learning environment where every individual is valued and respected as part of the school community. We offer pupils a dedicated team of staff who are committed to developing the knowledge, skills, attitudes and understanding which will enable children to enjoy learning, achieve success and to feel content and fulfilled. We ensure that our children learn about, and have confidence in, themselves as learners so that every child makes good progress.

As an inclusive, caring school where every child matters, we recognise that all children have talents and abilities to celebrate, and a part of our role is to help them discover and develop these. We encourage a strong community spirit, where we show consideration and respect for each other; understand differences, and uphold kind, well-mannered behaviour.

At Mendell Primary School we take our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain seriously. We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed and lived out through the ethos and work of the school. All curriculum areas provide a vehicle for furthering understanding of these concepts and, in particular, our RE, PSHE and Philosophy for Children lessons provide excellent opportunities to deepen and develop understanding. Children embrace these concepts with enthusiasm and demonstrate a good understanding of their application to their own lives. These concepts, through the teaching of the Values, are shared with the children during Monday morning assembly and are reflected in all we do and say, in and around school.

We value the partnership that exists between parents, children, staff and governors and strongly believe that by working together we can ensure our children have the best start on their educational journey.

To ensure each child’s journey has the maximum impact for them throughout their school life we believe that regular school attendance is key. This helps to raise standards in education and to improving the life chances of all. We expect regular attendance at school to enable children to gain maximum benefit from the range of educational and wider opportunities available to them.

Just as our school is at the heart of our community, our children are at the heart of all we do at Mendell.
