Physical Education at Mendell Primary

Our approach to our curriculum at Mendell is based upon: Consistency    Insistency    Ambition

PE is developing physical skills and fitness

The PE curriculum has been planned to:

  • Allow application of learning across the subject  - for example: In tag rugby in Year 3, children are introduced to the passing technique and are taught how to improve accuracy of passing. This skill is transferred to learning in Year 6 as during the basketball unit, pupils are taught to use new passing techniques with more speed, power and control and must be able to identify why possession is lost as a result of technique and accuracy.

  • Allow overlearning of key concepts in other subjects. for example: science is taught as part of our PE curriculum as the children are taught to understand that exercise changes body condition and what it means to lead a healthy lifestyle. This is planned in at different times to allow overlearning and application of learning in other subjects.


Early Years and PE (Physical Education & Sport)

Our curriculum starts from EYFS and is progressive throughout Early Years, KS1, lower KS2, upper KS2 and beyond. Our carefully chosen PE scheme includes progression maps, lesson plans, important vocabulary and key outcomes for all year groups including Foundation Stage.  Our Nursery class also follows a curriculum map which has been provided by our external consultants, Edsential, to support the early stages of Physical Development for our learners following ‘Development Matters 2020’. 

Continuous Provision activities are set up to provide an enriched learning environment for children to independently apply new learning and to practise skills learned in PE lessons which support our children to develop their  ‘Characteristics Of an Effective Learner’. Adult led activities provide another layer to deepen children’s learning within PE.

Y4 thoroughly enjoyed their Fitness and Nutrition workshop this term all about ‘Sugar Swaps’. They learned what happens to their body if it is provided with too much sugar and the effect this can have.

Yr2 have been busy creating their Spring dances in PE this half term.

  •  Reflect National Association guidance: Mendell Primary uses planning written by Edsential who are a ‘Community Interest Company’ owned by Cheshire West & Chester Council and Wirral Council.  The Edsential PE Scheme of Work has been developed in response to a need for a planning and teaching resource that is in line with how schools are wanting to deliver Physical Education.  As a school we chose to use Edsential’s planning resources as they focus on children learning the key skills which are transferable across different sports (such as passing, attacking or defending) along with a drive for children to think about tactics, teamwork and fitness alongside each activity.
