Attendance at Mendell Primary School

At Mendell, we work hard to support children and families with good attendance.

Attendance

Good attendance at school is crucial for children’s social and educational development. Poor attendance can affect children's ability to make and keep friendships; a vital part of growing up. Setting good attendance patterns from an early age, from nursery through primary school will also help your child later on in their life. Pupils with no absence are 2.2 times more likely to achieve 5+ GCSEs A*- C or equivalent including English and mathematics - that shows how important good attendance is.

Punctuality

Punctuality is also really important. Our school gates open at 8:40am and close at 8:50am. Children arriving after this time will be marked as late and will need to come into school via the main entrance. Sometimes children get worried and anxious about being late as they miss the start of the school day and often feel like they are ‘playing catch up’. Help your child get the best start to the day by arriving on time.

Holidays

Parents and Carers must ask permission for their child to be absent during term time. It is at the Headteacher’s discretion to decide whether or not the absence will be authorised. The Headteacher will authorise leave during term time for exceptional circumstances only. If leave is taken without permission, or no application is made, parents and carers may beg issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice. Parents and Carers wishing to apply for their child to have leave from school should complete a request form and return it to school for authorisation at least two weeks before the proposed leave.
